All pupils will be required to study 3 AS or Level 3 courses and the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate in Year 12.
Pupils wanting to study 3 or more Advanced Subsidiary courses must attain at least 5 GCSE passes at Grades A* – C. Any student who does not achieve 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C will not be able to attend Ysgol Bro Preseli Sixth Form. The decision to refuse a place to the sixth form rests with the Head teacher or Head of Sixth Form. The school also provides opportunities to re-sit GCSEs in the core subjects: every pupil returning to school without a GCSE ‘C’ grade or above in Mathematics and English Language will have the opportunity to attend re-sit lessons.
Students applying for the Sixth Form should have achieved a high degree of success in the GCSE subject he/she wishes to study at A level. Students with a Grade C at GCSE will generally be admitted to an AS level course, some subjects require a minimum of a B grade to cope with the demands of the cours. Specific details can be found in the Sixth Form prospectus.
For a new subject, which is not offered at GCSE, achievement in other relevant subjects will be considered for course entry. In certain circumstances, some departments may allow a student to study an A level subject without having previously studied the subject at GCSE. The decision whether to allow this to happen or not lies with the Head of Department.
During the two years in the Sixth Form, a programme of Careers education, advice and counselling is organised for every pupil. The Careers Officer is present during the two induction days. The Careers Officer will also conduct individual interviews and will work together with members of school staff to give advice regarding higher education. Additionally, every pupil in year 12 is given the opportunity to follow a ‘Higher Education Activities Week’. The work concentrates on preparing applications and achieving suitable placements at further and higher education establishments, taking a Gap Year, scholarships, employment etc.
